NDOT's main priority is the safety, connectivity and mobility of all Nevada state roads. That's why we are undertaking a series of Safety Management Plans (SMPs) throughout Nevada.

SMPs analyze safety issues and concerns in a specific area by incorporating crash data, accessibility, public and stakeholder input and roadway engineering. The goal of these studies is to ultimately improve the safety, mobility and connectivity of the area so pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles can all securely access and share the road.

The SMP process is consistent with the Nevada Strategic Highway Safety Plan's goals of reducing crashes and fatalities, particularly at intersections, in half by 2035.

West Fourth Street, Washoe County & City of Reno

The West 4th Street Safety Management Plan study area includes portions of Downtown Reno that are expected to experience significant redevelopment in the future. The corridor currently consists of casino and entertainment, commercial, light industrial and residential uses through a mature part of the City of Reno and the Old Lincoln Highway. The SMP provides an opportunity to improve safety for all roadway users while also supporting future development along the corridor.  Further information can be found at: West Fourth Street Safety Management Plan.

East Bonanza Road, City of Las Vegas

The East Bonanza Road Safety Management Plan (SMP) is a transportation planning effort that is studying the section of East Bonanza Road between Las Vegas Boulevard and Nellis Boulevard in the City of Las Vegas. This corridor serves as a vital link for the East Las Vegas community connecting residents and visitors to homes, shops, schools, parks, and many other amenities and resources; however, it experiences high crash rates that are above state average. This SMP study will analyze data and seek stakeholder input that will result in infrastructure improvements that can be made so vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists can all share the road safely. Further information can be found at: East Bonanza Road Safety Management Plan.

The East Carey Avenue study area extends approximately 5 miles from Interstate 15 (I-15) to Sloan Lane within City of North Las Vegas and Clark County. The corridor experiences significant crashes exceeding statewide averages for similar facilities. This SMP study is focused on gathering stakeholder input for
improvements that could be made so vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles can all share the road safely. The SMP process is consistent with the Nevada Strategic Highway Safety Plan’s goals of reducing the number and severity of roadway crashes in the state.  Further information can be found at: East Carey Avenue Safety Management Plan.

South Virginia Street, City of Reno

The South Virginia Street Safety Management Plan (SMP) is a transportation planning effort that is studying how to improve safety along South Virginia Street between E. Patriot Boulevard and Mt. Rose Highway in Reno. Originally constructed to be the primary road connecting Reno and Carson City, this section of South Virginia Street has now been bypassed by I-580 and is transforming into a major mixed-use residential and commercial corridor. With a growing mix of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers using the roadway, this SMP will identify key factors contributing to existing safety concerns and will provide recommendations to improve safety for all roadway users.
