We are dedicated to traffic safety, and many NDOT road projects add important safety enhancements to keep you safer on Nevada roads.

As part of that, NDOT is building approximately $10 million in pedestrian safety improvements primarily in Clark and Washoe counties in 2015 and 2016. The funding will build additional pedestrian safety improvements, including enhanced crosswalks, pedestrian-activated flashing beacons and other safety enhancements in Nevada's urban areas.

The engineering improvements are part of integrated enforcement, public education, engineering and emergency response programs to save lives on Nevada roads.

Reno

Second Street will receive pedestrian safety enhancements, including:

• Flashing pedestrian crossing signs, allowing pedestrians to activate signs to help stop traffic as they cross
• Curb and sidewalk extensions (known as bulb-outs) will be installed, extending the concrete sidewalk at pedestrian crossing areas to provide enhanced pedestrian visibility, shorten crossing distances and ultimately provide an additional safety buffer between pedestrians and vehicles
• Crosswalks, pedestrian ramps and street lighting enhancements 
• A compact traffic roundabout will be installed at the intersection of Second and Giroux streets for easier and safer vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow
• At the Arlington and Island Avenue intersection near Wingfield Park, sidewalks will be improved and a constantly-flashing pedestrian crossing light replaced with flashing pedestrian-activated crossing signs
• The sweeping right turn from southbound Kietzke Lane to Second Street will be updated for designated, safer vehicle merging 

Carson City

South Stewart Street Pedestrian Safety Improvements

• Consolidate multiple existing crossings of Stewart Street
• Install mid-block pedestrian crossings with refuge island and pedestrian RRFB flashers
• Enhanced LED Lighting at pedestrian crossings
• ADA ramp and sidewalk improvements

Carson City & Dayton

The proposed project sites, US 50 at Pike Street, Silver State Street and Lake Shore Boulevard, consist of a combination of the following safety improvements:

• New signs and striping
• Crosswalks
• LED Lighting
• Active Advance Warning Sign & Rectangular                   Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFB’s)
• Curb and sidewalks
• ADA Ramps

The project sites are in Douglas County, Carson City, and Lyon County. The three locations are listed below with their corresponding number shown on the project map.

Lake Tahoe

State Route 28 Pedestrian Safety Improvements in Incline Village

• Relocation of crosswalk on State Route 28 on either side of Village Boulevard closer to the existing bus stop.
• Pedestrian crossing warning signs equipped with pedestrian activated flashing beacons on either side of Village Boulevard.
• Additional street lighting and sidewalk ramps, along with pedestrian crossing signs in the crosswalks.
• New left turn lanes from Country Club Drive to State Route 28 were also installed with new traffic detection systems to help drivers most efficiently and safely get through the intersection.

Lakeshore Boulevard/Marla Bay

• Replacing existing constant flashing beacon with Pedestrian Activated
• Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFB)
• Installing Active Advance Warning RRFB
• Installing LED Street Lighting at the Crosswalk
• ADA ramps

Las Vegas

Boulder Highway (S.R. 582) Pedestrian Safety Project

Based on previously identified safety criteria, NDOT has identified eight locations along Boulder Highway that have had excessive amounts of pedestrian fatalities recently. Each intersection is different and therefore calls for varying pedestrian safety designs.

NDOT recently completed the first pedestrian improvements at Boulder Highway and Sun Valley Drive. Enhancements include an overhead flashing yellow beacon, a painted crosswalk and a Danish-offset median island.

Future intersection improvements along Boulder Highway  include:

• Installation of updated ADA compliant sidewalks
• Installation of S-islands to control conflict points.
• Installation of pedestrian medians in the center of the roadway for safety while crossing
• Installation of rapid flashing beacons with advanced warning signal
• Installation of updated roadway signs and striping
• Enhanced pedestrian lighting

Lake Mead Boulevard, Charleston Boulevard and Blue Diamond Road will also receive pedestrian safety enhancements.

Lake Mead Boulevard (S.R. 147) from Civic Center Drive to Pecos Road

• Narrowing roadway width to widen sidewalks.
• Creating ADA complaint driveways and crossway ramps.
• Replacing two-left lane turns with a raised median for access control.
• Constructing two new pedestrian crossings with refuge islands and pedestrian activated flashing beacon warnings.
• Constructing sidewalk ramps and raised median islands.

Charleston Boulevard (S.R. 159) from Hillside Place to Burnham Avenue, and between Arden Street and Nellis Boulevard

• Adding pedestrian bulb outs and pedestrian activated flashing beacons at the intersections of Hillside Place, 17th Street and Burnham Avenue.
• Widening and restriping the median and travel lane from Arden Street to Nellis Boulevard. 
• Constructing sidewalk ramps and raised median islands.

Craig Road (S.R. 573) between Decatur Boulevard and N. Fifth Street

• Wider sidewalks
• Improved lighting
• Pedestrian crosswalks
• Raised medians
• 11 intersections
