NDOT is installing automatic anti-icing systems on four bridges on Interstate 580 between Reno and Carson City to help delay and prevent ice formation on bridge surfaces. When wet weather pavement temperatures near freezing, pavement sensors on each bridge activate spray disks embedded within the concrete. Each recessed disk sprays a potassium acetate anti-icing solution for up to three seconds. This solution is spread by traffic, helping prevent/delay the formation of ice.
Benefits of Anti-Icing
Automatic anti-icing helps prevent and delay ice formation on bridge surfaces, providing the following benefits:
- Reduction of ice leads to safer roadways and enhanced winter mobility for Nevada drivers
- Because anti-icing chemicals are only sprayed when specific weather conditions are reached, chemical use is more targeted and can be reduced by up to three times. This reduction in chemical use provides cost savings and environmental benefits as well as helps delay corrosion of roadway surface
- The nozzles and spray are not easily visible to drivers, limiting potential driving distractions
Driving Safely in Winter Weather
- Only travel in winter weather when necessary, leave enough time to safely reach your destination and plan your route to avoid snowy/icy areas and steep hills
- Before leaving home, check weather and road conditions by dialing 511 within Nevada
- Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, mirrors, lights, turn signals and license plates
- Buckle up
- Turn off cruise control
- Avoid quick starts, stops and fast turns. Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly and gradually
- Reduce speed. Keep additional distance from other vehicles
- Do not slam on brakes. Apply steady pressure on ABS-equipped vehicles and pump the brakes if necessary on non-ABS vehicles
- Watch carefully for snow removal equipment
- Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas- they may freeze first
- If vehicle begins to skid, steer in direction of slide and slowly remove foot from accelerator
